Hassan Rouhani HIGHLIGHTS ranian President Hassan Rouhani, who arrived in Hyderabad on February 15 addressed a large gathering of Muslim intellectuals and scholars from different schools of thought. The President said that Iran wants friendly relations with not only Islamic countries but other countries as well. "There is no military solution to problems, the problem is only diplomatic in nature" said Hassan Rouhani. Rouhani also described how Iran stood against nations, and regions, in order to stop war, conflict and violence. "War is in fact started by defending the rights of the nations",said the Iranian President. Criticising the West, Rouhani said that they [West] oppressed and exploited the resources of the Eastern world. In the process, it established unfair relations between Iran, Asia and Africa,thereby creating a gap in the society. He also mentioned that the West did not justly reciprocate to the courteous behaviour of the Muslim world. "When Muslims had universities and technologies, and others did not, we as Muslims without any hesitation transferred our teachings and science to them, we promoted academics and zakaat. However, when they [West] became capable of doing the same, they did not treat us in the similar manner", said Rouhani. The President believes this to be the time for mutual unity against the West. He added that Iran wants to clear the hurdles of the people of Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. The President who began his visit to India in Hyderabad, lauded the Hyderabadi culture and tradition. He also said, "India is a living museum of religion, schools of thought and opportunities. We see a lot of temples, other places of worship, and we see them co-existing in peace." Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif and Chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi are also accompanying President Rouhani.
